The McCook Community College baseball team made quick work of Western Nebraska, taking a five-inning, 12-1 win over Western Nebraska Sunday to wrap up the three-game series.

The Indians hit five home runs including a pair from freshman Zack Beatty (Maple Park, Ill.) to power the Tribe as freshman starting pitcher Ethan Fritz (freshman, Bellevue, Neb.) kept the Cougar bats in check.

“It was a fun day today, we came out and swung the bats well,” said MCC Coach Jon Olsen. “Ethan was really good on the mound, he was down in the zone and had his slider going, just a good all around-complete win.”

With the five home runs Sunday, MCC is in the top 10 in the nation with 75 on the year.

MCC won two-of-three games in the series to wrap up the Region IX schedule, and setting the stage for the Region IX tournament, this weekend. The Indians are the second seed in the region’s north division and will host the third-seed team in the south, Luna Community College. Dates and game times for the best-of-three series, will be announced later.

“It was good series win this weekend, wish we could have closed out Game 2 yesterday but give credit to Western,” Olsen said. “Hopefully we can keep the momentum and bats going into the first round next weekend.”

On Sunday freshman Daniel Bannon (Sydney, Australia) led off the MCC first with a single, stole second and came home on an RBI single from Ricardo Hernandez (sophomore, Ponce, Puerto Rico). Beatty hit the first of his two homers on the afternoon to right field to give MCC a 3-0, and giving Beatty 17 home runs on the season. That lead lasted until Western scored a run in the fourth inning off MCC starter Ethan Fritz (freshman, Bellevue, Neb.).

The home team responded with a seven run-fourth inning which started off with back-to-back home runs by Beatty (his 18th) and Melwin Perez (sophomore, San Sebastian, Puerto Rico). Perez hit his first home run of the season Saturday in Game 2 of the series, homered later in the game for his second and on Sunday for his third home run in less than 24 hours. Later in the fourth inning, Bannon’s two-run double put MCC up 7-1, a Cougar error led to another run and Hernandez wrapped up the scoring with a two-run home run giving the Tribe a 10-1 lead. It was Hernandez’s 17th of the year.

Sophomore Trevor Pacheco (Pueblo, Colo.) led off the MCC fifth with a walk and Roy Waterman (freshman, Miami, Fla.) ended the game on the 10-run rule with his home run to left field, his first of the season.

Fritz picked up the win allowing four hits, one walk and he fanned four in five innings of work.

MCC goes to 29-24 on the year and will close out the regular season at home Tuesday with a 2 p.m. game against Colby Community College. MCC has split the two games with the Trojans, losing 18-15 in Colby on March 24, losing 11-3 in Colby on April 13, and winning 11-10 April 27 in McCook.

Looking ahead to the Region IX Tournament series, Luna is 23-21 overall and were 11-16 heading into a three-game weekend series with Otero Junior College.

This is the first year the Rough Riders are in Region IX for baseball (and softball). MCC’s initial series with Luna took place in Las Vegas, N.M., March 27-28. MCC won 16-3 and lost 0-2 in the first doubleheader and won 11-7 and lost 4-14 in the second doubleheader.

This is the first year for this post-season format which now includes all teams playing first-round games this weekend in a best-of-three series followed the next weekend with a four-team double-elimination tournament.
