MCC drops games to NJC; get No. 3 seed in tournament
The McCook Community College softball team lost a pair of games to Northeastern Junior College Saturday to decide the second and third seeds for the Region IX tournament seeding.
NJC won the first game 2-0 and took the second one 13-2.
Trinidad State claimed the regular season title and the right to host the tournament with a 20-6 record in Region IX (27-11 overall.) The Plainswomen finish second at 20-6, (33-15 overall) and MCC third at 18-8 and 36-12 overall. Otero will be the No. 4 seed Lamar and Western Nebraska are playing two games Sunday to decide the fifth and sixth seed. Western is 6-18 and Lamar is 5-17 and. Luna Community College will be the seventh seed.

GAME 1 – Northeastern JC 2, McCook CC 0: NJC freshman Sara Lynch shut down the Indian offense with two hits and three walks to win the third game of the weekend series.
The Plainswomen scored a run in the third and added another in the fifth.
MCC got a one-out single in the second inning from sophomore Emily Arp but she was erased on an inning-ended lineout. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Indians got their second hit of the game from sophomore Sidney Sansregret – a leadoff single, then drew two walks to load the bases but were unable to score.
GAME 2 – Northeastern JC 13, McCook CC 2: Freshman Alexis Cortez (Aurora, Colo.) singled to lead off the MCC first, sophomore Taryn Jenkins drove her to third with a double, and freshman Ashland Baca (Byers, Colo.) drove home the first run of the afternoon for MCC.
The Lady Indians added another in the second inning. Freshman Rae VanMilligan (Marion, Iowa) lined a one-out single to center, freshman Taylor Thein (West Branch, Iowa) and freshman Alexis Cortez (Aurora, Colo.) both walked to load the bases for Alice Midiri who singled home VanMilligan to put MCC up 2-0
NJC responded to take the lead with three runs in the third off MCC starter Avery O'Neil (Ellsworth, Wis.). The Plainswomen added four runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the seventh, racking up 19 hits in the series finale. O’Neil pitched three innings and allowed three runs, Anna Wilcox pitched 1.2 innings and allowed four runs, Lana Armsbury (Omaha Westside) pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed six runs.
MCC had nine hits in the game led by VanMilligan. Ashland Baca had two.
