MCC Golfers in second place after first round at OJC meet
LA JUNTA, Colo. – The McCook Community College Golf team is in second place after the first of two rounds here at the Otero Junior College tournament. Eastern Wyoming leads the Region IX field, shooting a five-under par 275. MCC is 15 shots back shooting a 290 on the day. Northeastern Junior College is in third place, 20 shots back of the Lancers and the host Rattlers set at 302 – 22 shots off the lead.
“Even though it was a perfect weather day and a very scoreable course, we had to grind for our scores today,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. “It was not as good as we expected on this course but it could have been a lot worse based on how badly we were spraying the ball.”
Freshmen Brayden Dahl (Hillcrest, South Africa) and Cayden Wynne (Lincoln Southwest) both posted team-low 72s on the day and are tied for ninth place in the individual competition.
Fellow freshmen Payton Craw (McCook) and Ethan Gough (Hillcrest, South Africa) both shot three-over par rounds of 73 and are tied for 11th place. Freshman Jordan Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) carded a five-over 75 and is in a tie at 16th place.
“Any round where 75 is your highest score is still pretty solid,” Loop said. “We have a lot of ground to make up as Eastern Wyoming shot a 275, but I have a feeling tomorrow will be a low-round day.”
Competing as an individual, freshman Nathan Sughroue (Hastings Adams-Central) shot a four-over 74 and is in 15th place.
The OJC tournament – and the fall part of the semester-long Region IX season – concludes on Friday.
