Gallagher Canyon, Midway boating access projects set to begin

Renovation of the boating access facilities at Gallagher Canyon State Recreation Area and Midway Reservoir are set to start in November.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges resident users to plan accordingly as there are limited access points to retrieve watercraft on these reservoirs.

The objective of the projects is to improve the accessibility and amenities for recreational boaters, anglers and water enthusiasts. 

Boat ramps will be closed starting the week of Nov. 11 at Gallagher Canyon and starting the week of Nov. 18 at Midway. Winter weather conditions will play a major role in progress of construction. Both ramps are anticipated to be completed before the 2025 boating season.

The primitive rock ramps at both locations will be renovated to single-lane concrete ramps with improved slope. Gallagher Canyon truck and trailer parking will be expanded with a new crushed rock aggregate lot. Both locations will benefit from area lighting and the construction of new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant parking. A stormwater flume will be built adjacent to the Gallagher Canyon ramp to mitigate erosion issues. Riprap protection will be added to the adjacent shorelines at both locations. The dock at Midway will be replaced with a new floating launch dock.

Game and Parks has been working with Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District on design and development of the projects.
