(Hastings, Nebraska) – Hastings College is launching the Jackson Scholars program, a groundbreaking opportunity for aspiring artists to hone their craft and launch their careers. The program, housed within the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC), one of the preeminent art centers in the Midwest, will provide unparalleled support and mentorship to scholarship recipients.
Students selected to the program will receive a full-ride scholarship to Hastings College, including tuition, fees, room and meals for four years. Scholars will also receive professional enrichment opportunities. An initial cohort of four students, current high school seniors, will be selected for the fall of 2025, and the program will grow to 8-10 students annually in the coming years. Additional details can be found at hastings.edu/jacksonscholars.
“This is an incredible opportunity for art majors to receive a full-ride scholarship to Hastings College where they will enjoy a four-year residency at the JDAC,” said Dr. Wayne Riggs, vice president for academic affairs. “Students will be able to select a studio and become an apprentice to experienced faculty while building a community and being given opportunities for internships, practicums and other experience.”
The Jackson Scholars program is designed to cultivate artistic talent, foster community engagement and prepare students for successful careers after they graduate from Hastings College.
“The program emphasizes the importance of artistic excellence and professional development, providing scholars with the tools and resources they need to succeed,” said Dr. Brian Corr, associate professor of art and chair of the department. “Enrichment funds will support students as they seek internships, practicums and other experiences, such as conferences, exhibitions and study away opportunities, tailored to each individual’s interests.”
High school seniors interested in applying to be a Jackson Scholar for fall 2025 are encouraged to apply before the March 1 deadline via a link at hastings.edu/jacksonscholars. Students must be interested in majoring in art and demonstrate exceptional artistic potential and a commitment to community engagement. As part of the application process, students will need to submit a portfolio and answer essay-style questions.
Students must also apply and be admitted to Hastings College.
Interviews with finalists for the inaugural class will happen in March, with offers going to those selected happening by April 1.
Funding for the Jackson Scholars program also allows Hastings College to create an artist-in-residence program in the JDAC. This rotating guest artist-in-residence will further enrich JDAC’s creative environment.
