Northeast Community College spoiled the home opener Saturday for the McCook Community College baseball team, sweeping the Indians 17-7 and 5-2.

“We have just got to start playing better, we just don’t put more than one phase together at a time and that needs to change,” said MCC Coach Jon Olsen.

NECC scored six times in the first and sixth innings to take Game 1 despite two home runs from MCC sophomore Nathan Hutchison (Riverton, Wyo.).

The Hawks broke up a 2-2 tie in Game 2 with a run in the fifth inning and added one each in the sixth and seventh to complete the doubleheader sweep.

“We walked or hit 11 guys in Game 1 and 13 in Game two,” said Olsen. “It’s tough to explain how to win doing that, then we didn’t hit at all Game 2 after I felt we did some nice things offensively in the first game.”

MCC (3-8) will travel to Norfolk Sunday for two more games with NECC (8-5) starting at 2 p.m.

“We have the opportunity to get out and play again tomorrow so need to take advantage of it,” said Olsen.

GAME 1 – Northeast CC 17, McCook 7: The Hawks scored six runs in the first and put the game away with six more in the seventh innings to take the first game.

“I’ll give northeast credit today in Game 1 in the first inning they really came out swinging it, they put five or six really good swings on it, after that we just kept giving them opportunities to have runners on,” said Olsen. “Then when they have some good hitters in their lineup it’s going to haunt you.”

Down 6-0 in the first, MCC came back with four runs. Nathan Hutchison led off the MCC inning with a double and scored on an RBI-single by freshman Dalton Berg (Frederick, Colo.). Sophomore Owen Glover (Elderslie, New South Wales) singled in the second MCC run and two more scored on a Hank error to make it a 6-4 game.

After NECC scored twice in the second, Hutchison homered in the bottom of the frame as MCC trailed 8-5. The Hawks led 9-5 with a run in the third but freshman Connor Charvat (Elkhorn South) hit a solo home run to make it a 9-6 game
