MCC golfers fifth at Bethel Spring Invite

McCook Community College Golf

NEWTON, Kan. – The McCook Community College golf team had a 33-shot improvement from Saturday to Sunday to finish fifth in the Bethel (Kan.) two-day invitational tournament.

The first round was played Saturday at the Hesston Kan. Municipal Golf Park with Sunday’s round at Sand Creek Station.

“I’m pretty happy with the guys’ efforts this week in Kansas,” said MCC Coach Grant Case. “Saturday was some of the toughest golf weather that I’ve ever been in – really cold and windy – which made scoring very difficult. The guys bounced back again in the second round which was nice to see.”

The Indians posted the second lowest round of any team in the tournament with a 14-over par round – just four shots higher than the eventual tournament champion Southwest Christian. That team shot a +10 Sunday to finish at +23 for the two-day tournament, 18 shots ahead of second-place Southeast Community College.

MCC finished fifth among the 11 teams (NAIA and JUCO schools) with a two-day score of +61.

“If we can start turning in some good Day 1 scores, and continue to perform on the second day, we’ll be right there in contention as a team,” said Case.

Sophomore Matt Grimonprez (Wasquehal, France) came back from a first round 79 to post a 73 Sunday and finished seventh.

“Matt continues to impress, with another top 10 finish,” said Case.

Sophomores Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) and Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) shot 154 and 158 respectively for the tournament. Donachie was two-over on Sunday and Brown was three over par on the final day.

“Andrew and Ross didn’t have their best stuff this week but found a way to manage what they had relatively well,” said Case.

Chance Gambini (sophomore, Las Vegas, Nevada) had a two-day 169 and freshman Cole Graham (McCook) shot a 182.

The Indians are back in the region with a two-day tournament starting Thursday in Torrington, Wyo.

“We’re looking forward to getting back into Region 9 action later this week in Torrington,” said Case.
