MCC Golfers open play at national championship
HOBBS, N.M. – A pair of McCook Community College freshman golfers, competing as individuals, were among those competing Tuesday at the opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship. This year’s tournament is held at Rockwind Links.
“The course is playing tough, the greens are fast and hard to read, and the nerves of playing at nationals can be hard to deal with,” said MCC Coach Tyler Loop. “We had early tee times and got done before the heat today.”
Freshman Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) shot a five-over par 76 Tuesday while freshman Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d’ascq, France) carded a first-round 86.
Four players finished the day at four-under par, tying for the individual lead. The top 23 golfers shot even-par or better in the 127-player field.
MCC did not qualify as a team this season and is not among the 24 teams competing for the team title. New Mexico Junior College tops the team leaderboard at four-under par, four shots ahead of Midland Community College of Texas.
Eastern Wyoming, which won the Region IX championship this year is tied for 10th place in the standings shooting a nine-over par 293.
The four-day tournament continues Wednesday.
“Tomorrow will be a long hot day with late times,” said Loop. “I expect we'll see some good rounds from both our guys.”
