The McCook Community College golf team, under new coach Grant Case, will open the season Thursday and Friday at Riverton, Wyo.

“I’m really looking forward to the fall season and using the first couple events to get back into the tournament golf mentality and using that momentum as we continue the fall season into the spring,” said Case.

This week’s Central Wyoming tournament will be the first of six straight weeks of Region IX competition.

Case was named MCC’s new men’s golf coach this summer, taking over for Tyler Loop, who coached the team for 11 years. The Indians’ new coach is originally from York, played for five seasons at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids Iowa, and helped coach the team last season.

He takes over a team with four returning sophomores and three freshmen,

Returning sophomores include Andrew Brown (Wollongong, Australia) and Matt Grimonprez (Villenuave-d'ascq, France) who both qualified for the NJCAA National Tournament in May as freshman. Brown finished the national tournament at +24 shooting rounds of 76, 78, 74 and 80 for a total of 308. Grimonprez had a 326 with rounds of 86, 83, 77 and 80.

Other returners include Ross Donachie (Narin, Scotland) who joined the team in January of this year and Chance Gambini (Las Vegas).

Incoming freshmen include: Cole Graham of McCook, Xander Sellman of Iola, Kan. and Thatcher Ommert, Montgomery, Texas.

“Watching the guys these first two weeks it’s obvious they all have the talent, and work ethic, to compete at a high level,” said Case. “It’s just cleaning up some course management and mental mistakes that could potentially cost us strokes.”

The fall season will culminate with the MCC Invite Oct. 10-11 at Heritage Hills.
