MCC Volleyball sweeps Otero for homecoming

The McCook Community College volleyball team picked up a 3-0 win over Otero College Friday night for homecoming. The Lady Indians won 27-25, 25-16, 25-23.

“We need to execute the little things and play better on defense,” said MCC Coach Hayley Kobza.

Freshman Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) led the MCC attack with nine kills with a solo block and two digs. Caylin Barnett (sophomore, Southwest High School) had eight kills, one assist block and led MCC with 14 digs.

Sophomore Rowan Tribelhorn (Yuma, Colo.) had seven kills along with six assist blocks. Ella Verts (freshman, Marshall, Mo.) had one kill and one block.

“We did well at getting touches on the block, but we need to be better at putting them down,” said Assistant Coach Genevieve Hopkinson. “We also need to pick it up on serve receive. Normally we’re pretty good there but tonight we struggled.”

Romina Martinez Castro (sophomore, Cochabamba, Bolivia) chipped in with five kills, three assist blocks, two service aces and eight digs.

Freshman Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) led MCC with 25 assists to go with 10 digs, two assist blocks and one ace. Cibeles Bothwell (sophomore, Spring, Texas) had 11 digs.

Audrey Holm (freshman, Paxton) had two service aces and sophomore Emerie Rios (Sterling, Colo.) had one assist block.

Otero goes to 6-20 on the season under former MCC assistant Rick Brown. The Rattlers fall to 0-4 in Region IX South.

MCC improves to 17-7 and 2-2 in the region and will take on Trinidad State at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Lady Trojans are 19-6 on the season and 2-2 in the region.

“Today wasn’t our best and we can do better and we’re going to do that tomorrow,” said Kobza.
