NEMA Urges Nebraskans to Prepare During National Preparedness Month

September 3, 2025 (LINCOLN, NEB.) — As part of National Preparedness Month, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is urging all Nebraskans to take time to prepare for emergencies and disasters that can strike at any time.
“Preparedness isn’t just about having supplies—it’s about peace of mind,” said NEMA Assistant Director Erv Portis. “Having a plan in place helps reduce panic when emergencies happen. It helps protect lives.”
Nebraskans are urged to build or update emergency supply kits for their homes, workplaces, and vehicles. These kits should include:
-Flashlight with extra batteries
-Phone chargers
-First aid kit and medical essentials for the entire family
-Water and 3-day supply of non-perishable food
-Blankets
-Pet supplies
-Extra change of clothing
Families experiencing food insecurity can turn to local community food banks for assistance in building a basic kit. After assembling your kit, store it in an accessible, safe location and ensure all family members know where it is. NEMA’s Family Disaster Preparedness Kit is available online to help Nebraskans get started.
NEMA will be sharing tips and reminders throughout the month on social media. Follow along and get involved:
