No. 10 New Mexico JC cruises past MCC Women
HOBBS, N.M. – The tenth-ranked New Mexico Junior College women rolled to their 12th win on the season Saturday cruising to a 74-46 win over the McCook Community College Women in the New Mexico Junior College Classic.
The Thunderbirds never trailed in the game, building a 17-9 first-quarter lead, and outscoring MCC 22-8 in the second period on the way to a 39-17 half-time lead.
“Defensively we were slow and New Mexico JC plays really fast,” said MCC Coach Brandon Pritchett.
MCC held serve in the third period tying NMJC 16-16. The Thunderbirds outscored the Lady Indians 19-16 in the fourth period.
MCC shot 29 percent from the field, made just one of 14 shots from beyond the 3-point arc, (7.1 percent) and made nine of 12 free throws (75 percent). The Lady Indians turned the ball over 18 times
“We took a lot of bad, uncharacteristic shoots today,” said Pritchett. “We didn't shoot the ball well all weekend.”
NMCC shot 41.9 percent from the field, made two of 16 triples (12.5 percent) and made 20 of 28 free throws (71.4 percent. The Thunderbirds held a 43-31 rebound edge.
Sophomore Miriam Wahlqvist (Helsingborg, Sweden) topped the scoring column for MCC with seven points. Sophomore Laia Izquierdo Altimira (Barcelona, Spain) led the Lady Indians with eight rebounds to go along with six points. Mar Molina Munoz (freshman, Parets del Valles, Spain) chipped in five points.
Sophomore Jacelyn Jorgensen (Paxton, Neb.) and freshman Selma Cehic (Frastanz, Austria) both scored five points off the bench. MCC had 24 bench points in the game (NMJC had 31).
The Thunderbirds improve to 12-1.
MCC falls to 6-9. The Lady Indians will wrap up the pre-holiday schedule Tuesday hosting Gillette College (8-4) in a 4 p.m. game at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
“We have one more game to finish up the semester, we have to put this weekend behind us prepare for Gillette,” said Pritchett.
