No. 4 NJC sweeps past Lady Indians

The McCook Community College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to No. 4 Northeastern Junior College Thursday night in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center. The Plainswomen won 25-13, 25-13 and 25-20.

“I thought we came out in each set ready to play, but it seemed like when momentum wasn’t on our side, we started to break down a bit,” said MCC Assistant Coach Victoria Thomas. “

NJC established their attack hitting .538 and 435 in the first two sets. MCC didn’t reach positive numbers on the attack until the third set when they hit .091.

The Lady Indians got out to a 7-3 lead in the third set forcing NJC to call a timeout.

“When it came to the third set we were feeling a little bit better, but we just didn’t get a chance to execute in any set,” said Thomas. “But in the third set we did a little bit better job competing – especially compared to the first time we face them when we played at their house.”

Sophomore Charlee Russick (Berthoud, Colo.) led MCC with seven kills and added five digs. Paulina Fister (Tuszyn, Poland) had three kills, two digs and a service ace. MCC had just 20 kills on the night.

Freshman Libby Cole (Grant) led MCC with 11 assists and added a service ace and four digs. Landree McNair (Imperial) had six assists and ace and tied with Brooke Nelson (Berthoud, Colo.) for a team-high eight digs.

Leia Young (freshman, Amarillo, Texas) led MCC on the block with a solo block and two assists to go along with a service ace. MCC had five total team blocks.

NJC improves to 11-0 in the Region IX South standings and 25-3 overall.

MCC falls to 6-5 in the standings and 10-15 overall. The Lady Indians have a week break in the schedule and will host Southeast Community College Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. for Sophomore Night followed with a 2 p.m. home match Oct. 25 against North Platte.
