Sheriff's Office Responded to Weekend Wreck

McCook Dispatch contacted me on the above date and time reference a vehicle that appeared to have been in a roll over accident. The vehicle was in a field, on the west side of Hwy 83 about 6 miles south, the caller was unaware if it had been called in previously or not.

I responded to the area, finding the vehicle in the corner of a field adjacent to Road 709 on Hwy 83. The vehicle had extensive damage to both front and rear, essentially everywhere. I exited my unit crossed the ditch and the barbwire fence to inspect the wreckage more closely and heard a victim moaning for help.

I found the victim some distance from the vehicle. It was obvious from the significant injuries that an ambulance was needed. I gathered some blankets from the ground and covered the victim. I tried to determine if she was alone at the time, she said she was not driving. I requested assistance from Western Rural Fire to help search the area.

After a thorough search of the immediate area it was decided that the victim was the lone occupant of the vehicle, except for the blue and yellow macaw found on the vehicle.

The victim was eventually flown from McCook for further care. Attempts were made to contact family or friends.

The scene appears to indicate that the victim may have fallen asleep while northbound toward McCook, driving on the east shoulder for nearly one hundred and fifty yards before swerving sharply left to reenter the roadway. The vehicle began to yaw or skid side ways across the highway before entering the ditch. The passenger side rear then dug into the bank at the field edge causing the vehicle to cartwheel end to end before coming to rest over 60 feet north and west of entering the field. The vehicle was totaled. There was no indication that the seat belts were used and the victim was ejected, causing multiple injuries.

Red Willow Animal Clinic and Dr. Wayne for recovering the Macaw and McCook Dispatch for assisting in locating family of the victim.
