CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Western Nebraska Community College put an end to the McCook Community College volleyball season Thursday sweeping the Lady Indians 3-0 in a Region IX Tournament elimination game. The Cougars won 25-18, 25-16, 25-19.
This was the final game for six sophomores including: Romina Martinez Castro (Cochabamba, Bolivia); Caylin Barnett (McCook, / Southwest High School); Rowan Tribelhorn (Yuma, Colo.); Emerie Rios (Sterling, Colo.) who graduated this past spring but came back to complete her second year of eligibility; transfer Cibeles Bothwell (Spring, Texas); and Kayten Hagan (Kearney/Amherst High School) who was unable to play this season after an early August knee injury.
Rios led MCC in kills Thursday with eight. Martinez had six kills, four digs, one block and two service aces. Barnett had five kills, seven digs and an ace.
Tribelhorn had four kills and a block, freshman Verts (Marshall, Mo.) was credited with an assist block and freshman Ailynn Wright (Sterling, Colo.) had four kills and an assist block.
Bothwell had five digs and an assist. Freshman Abby Thompson (Bison, S.D.) led MCC with 10 assists and added three digs. Freshman Megan Walker (Haxtun, Colo.) had nine assists and eight digs.
Western Nebraska improves to 27-9 and moves on for another elimination game Friday against the winner of Thursday's match between Western Wyoming and Laramie County Community College.
MCC closes out the season at 21-13.
